Our Adventure Grading System: Choosing the Right Walk for Your Family
One of the most common and sensible questions parents ask before joining an outdoor event is:
“How much experience do we need?”
At The Coddiwomple Club, we don’t believe adventure should be defined by age. Children grow at different rates, build confidence in different ways, and often surprise us with what they’re capable of.
That’s why our events are graded by experience, terrain, and distance, rather than age. This system is designed to help families choose an event that feels comfortable, enjoyable, and right for them.
Why We Use Grades Instead of Ages
Age alone rarely tells the full story. Some younger children happily walk for hours, while some older children prefer shorter, steadier outings. What matters more is comfort on uneven ground, willingness to keep going, and enjoyment of being outdoors.
Our grades are a guide, not a judgement. They exist to set expectations clearly and help families arrive prepared and relaxed.
The Coddiwomple Club Adventure Grades
Grade 1: Little Explorers
Best for: First adventures, toddlers, and very young children
Terrain: Parks, short woodland paths, flat or well-surfaced routes
Distance: Very short
Pace: Gentle, flexible, and unhurried
These outings are about curiosity rather than covering ground. Expect frequent stops for snacks, puddles, sticks, and quiet moments. Children may walk, toddle, be carried, or use a buggy depending on the route.
Grade 1 events are perfect for families who want a relaxed introduction to outdoor adventures in a welcoming, supportive setting.
Grade 2: Trail Walks
Best for: Families looking for a gentle but meaningful walk together
Terrain: Woodland trails, countryside paths, and easy-going tracks
Distance: Moderate, often over a few hours
Pace: Steady, with regular breaks
Trail Walks are ideal for children who may not yet be confident walkers but are happy to keep going at a comfortable pace with time to rest, snack, and explore along the way. These walks are unhurried and supportive, with plenty of opportunities to pause and regroup.
Children are not expected to be fast or experienced. What matters is a willingness to walk, explore, and enjoy being outdoors together.
All The Coddiwomple Club community walks are graded no higher than Grade 2, ensuring they remain accessible, social, and suitable for a wide range of families.
Grade 3: Hill Walks & Big Days Out
Best for: Families with regular walking experience
Terrain: Open hills, rougher paths, steeper climbs
Distance: Longer
Pace: Purposeful but well managed
Hill walks introduce sustained effort and elevation. Children should be comfortable walking for extended periods and managing their energy throughout the day.
These events reward preparation and patience, offering bigger views, a sense of achievement, and a deeper connection to the landscape.
Grade 4: Mountain Adventures
Best for: Experienced families and confident young hikers
Terrain: Mountain paths, ridges, steeper or rocky ground
Distance: Long
Pace: Managed, but demanding
Mountain adventures require commitment from everyone involved. Weather can change quickly, and routes may be exposed or challenging underfoot.
Children should be comfortable with long days outdoors and capable of carrying their own essentials. These events focus on resilience, teamwork, and the shared satisfaction of reaching places under your own steam.
Choosing the Right Grade for Your Family
When deciding which grade suits you best, consider:
- How far your child usually walks happily
- How they cope with uneven ground and hills
- Whether they enjoy being out for several hours
- How comfortable they are in changing weather
If you’re unsure, choosing a slightly lower grade often leads to a better experience for everyone.
Each event page clearly lists:
- The adventure grade
- Distance and terrain
- Expected pace
- A tailored kit list
This way, families know exactly what to expect before they arrive.
Adventure Grows With Experience
The aim of our grading system isn’t to limit anyone. It’s to support families as they grow in confidence and capability over time.
Many families start with Grade 1 or Grade 2 events and naturally progress as children build stamina, curiosity, and independence. That journey is part of the adventure itself.
